Downtime cost by country (2026): labour and energy defaults for 45 manufacturing countries
Pick a country and the calculator loads its official labour cost per hour and industrial electricity price. Add your own lines, operators and lost margin to price an hour of unplanned downtime; every default links to the statistic it comes from.

Change any input and the result updates. The labour and electricity defaults are the national statistics quoted above, not your plant's figures; replace them with your own numbers for a real estimate.

Labour cost and electricity price by country
Figures are quoted as published by each source (Eurostat, national statistics offices, BLS, ILOSTAT, energy regulators), in the source's currency and year. We do not convert currencies or estimate missing values; a dash means no official figure could be read.

How the calculator works
Monthly cost = downtime hours × lines × (operators × labour cost per hour + average load in kW × electricity price per kWh + lost margin per hour). Labour and energy are the floor: they are paid whether the line runs or not. Lost margin is your figure; it is normally the largest term and is left at zero until you enter it.

Frequently asked questions
Why is labour the floor of the downtime cost?
Because operators, technicians and supervisors are paid for the shift whether the line produces or not. The loaded labour cost per hour (wages plus employer contributions) times the people assigned to the line is the minimum cash cost of every idle hour.
Why do you not convert everything into one currency?
Because the sources report different years and definitions. Converting them would hide that and suggest a precision the data does not have. The table shows each figure in its own currency and year; the calculator uses the currency of the labour figure.
Where does lost margin come from?
From your plant: contribution margin per unit times the units you would have made in the lost hour. It is usually several times the labour and energy cost combined, which is why the calculator keeps it as a separate input.
